CONDITION AND HISTORY
Recently out of long-term, professional ownership, this '59 Spider Veloce is an excellent and highly original example. From the small taillights out back to the wonderful twin-carb 1300 up front it is the epitome of mid-century engineering at Alfa and design at Pininfarina, still stunning 60 years later in all her Rosso Alfa glory.
The car's body has been carefully preserved and maintained over the years, resulting in a tidy and solid structure underneath. The flowing lines of the Pininfarina sheetmetal appear relatively untouched (save for a beautiful, glossy respray) and have the correct body number stamps throughout. Some small dings and dents are present on the top of the passenger door, right front fender, and passenger side rocker, though most can be remedied via paintless dent repair. Chrome and glass throughout are in excellent shape, and the correct wheels appear freshly restored with new Vredesteins at each corner.
Inside, the snug cabin for two displays a warm and inviting patina. The thin-rimmed, black lacquer wheel sits front and center, featuring the correct "Giulietta Special" center cap and flanked by clear and lovely Veloce instruments that work well. Both seats are supportive and in great shape along with the original rubber mats, though the carpeting shows some fading. Behind the seats a fresh top with a perfect rear window folds above the original spare, jack, and tire iron, all neatly covered by a black vinyl curtain. The trunk features another well-preserved rubber mat and houses the battery in the right rear corner.
In August the car underwent a comprehensive service by BIF Motors in Mebane, NC, which included a full brake system rebuild, carb rebuilt, fuel system rebuild, and numerous other fixes along with a tune-up. It drives well, with strong, linear brakes, a precise clutch, and flawless five-speed gearbox (a common Giulietta upgrade). The twincam Alfa 1300 loves to rev and sing, with no undue smoking and easy starting from cold, while the DCO3 carbs make a spine-tingling induction noise and idle very smoothly. This wonderful drivetrain was the basis of many legendary Alfas, and here it's on display in one of the most gorgeous total packages the company ever offered.
