Provenance, rarity, and aesthetics all contribute to a classic car’s desirability. Collectors are more frequently looking for great history and originality, all of which are aspects of this beautiful numbers-matching Giulia Sprint Speciale.
According to Alfa Romeo Historic Motoring, chassis number AR 381399 originally corresponds to Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint Speciale (101.21) - Manufactured on the 25th January 1964 and sold new (through Alfa Romeo S.A. of Lugano, Switzerland) on the 26th January 1965 destined for California, USA. The Alfa’s original and sole owner took delivery at Rezzaghi Motors in San Francisco in 1965. The invoice shows it was special ordered in Metallic Light Grey/Silver over black leather upholstery, with upgraded Nardi steering wheel. "Numerazione delle vetture Alfa Romeo - dal 1910-72" by Luigi Fusi and further recorded sources document Chassis No.381399 as the very last Giulia SS chassis number.
The example offered here invites a careful inspection to the most discerning of enthusiasts. With only one registered keeper from new, this thoughtfully preserved Giulia retains ALL of its original body panels, wheels, equipment, body # stamps/chalkings and documentation from new. In fact, we also currently possess the vehicle’s original invoice, order form, verification certificate, import documentation, instruction book in-pouch, keys in-sheath, tools in roll (still sealed in factory plastic bag) and registration certificates from 1966-on bound on the steering column. Other noteworthy items include original AM push-button Blaupunkt radio, Borrani vented wheels, amber lenses and the unique plenum and air box - considered ‘regular’ 105 Veloce items, but are believed to be original on the late cars as several of the last hundred are equipped with this intake setup. Needless to say, this particular example is beyond incomparable to any SS currently available.
A few years after purchasing the car, the Owner and his Alfa moved to Washington State where the car permanently resided. In November of 1989, the car was in need of a freshening, so the SS was temporarily admitted to Vancouver, B.C. for three years where it was to receive a complete cosmetic and mechanical restoration. Disassembled and stripped to bare metal, the car’s body was refined and refinished in the original color, while carefully preserving the interior and other original components.
The owner has since gone through great lengths to preserve the overall original condition. The paint is lustrous and virtually unmarked, while the interior upholstery displays a tidy and perfect patina. The underside and engine compartment are remarkably clean. And the car runs as strong and smooth as the striking cosmetics imply.
A well respected Ferrari authorized dealership regularly serviced the car for many years post-restoration (over $17,500 in receipts), with recent work including new crank seals, re-built idler arm, new rear axle straps, frequent fluid changes - including engine oil & filter, brakes, coolant and gear oil, new tires and proper alignment.
Above all, the Giulia SS’s appeal lies in its good looks and driving pleasure. It continues to be one of the most recognizable and collectable post-war Alfa Romeos to date – and such an extraordinary find of a well-presented (non-Red) Speciale with great pedigree is simply unmatched. You will be pressed to find another such example.
