Between 1958 and 1962 a total of 27,466 “101” series Alfa Spiders and Sprints were produced. Among these, just 1,366 were the dynamic and highly stylized Sprint Speciale, a spin-off of the radical ‘BAT series’ cars.
This fine Sprint Speciale is a long-time California car having enjoyed one long-term owner in California for nearly twenty years.
While an Italian delivery car originally, the previous long-term owner had purchased the car from another central California resident in the early 1990s, confirming the was imported fairly early it is life.
As a late, European specification example, this Sprint Speciale is fitted with the smaller and more attractive side marker lights, and gauges in Italian script.
It is also fitted with the desirable 5-Speed transmission, which lends itself nicely to higher speed tour and rally driving, as well as freeway cruising among modern traffic.
The subject of a recent and comprehensive, shell-up restoration, upon completion in 2008 this example was awarded “Best of the Marque”, above all other Alfa Romeos in 2008 at the prestigious as well attended Concorso Italiano.
This restoration was both mechanical and cosmetic, and included paint, body rubber, chrome, upholstery, transmission and cylinder head rebuilds, underside and engine bay details, and many other smaller tasks.
Records on file indication expenditures for carburetor kits, differential seals and bearings, new headliner, carpet, seat, and inner door panel upholstery, wheel cylinder and brake shoes, new fuel (correct yellow) and cooling system hoses,
new hubcaps, new emblems, headlights, a rebuilt water pump, transmission bearings, seals, and speedometer drive, and rebuilt shocks. The head was rebuilt with new valves, valve spring retainers, cam followers, and reground cams.
As would be expected of a recently restored, award winning example, this Sprint Speciale makes and exceptional presentation. The body was included in the restoration works. The panel match is excellent throughout, and the paintwork superb.
The chrome is also very good, with virtually no age or weathering present. The interior is restored to original specification with vinyl trim in the correct pattern, and the correct carpets. The factory gauges and switchgear remain, and even the window washer bag is present.
The engine bay and undercarriage are both highly detailed, all the way down to the correct factory decals. Correct finishes are applied where appropriate, and the inner fender well and firewall have been repainted when fully stripped.
Included with the car is the Italian license plate, a July 1961 issue of Road and Track containing the Alfa Sprint Speciale road test, an Alfa Romeo Giulietta instruction book, a Glenn’s Alfa Romeo Repair & Tune-up guide, a Giulietta shop manual,
and a Giulietta 1300 spare parts catalogue, and records for the current ownership period detailed the extent of the restoration work performed.
While eligible for a growing number of tour and rally events, the highly detailed, comprehensively restored nature of this Giulietta makes it an outstanding candidate for concours showing.
With cars of this era appreciating, it is those of limited production, like the Sprint Speciale, which will enjoy the most significant increases in value.

This handsome late Giulietta Sprint Speciale displays concours-level quality care of a ground-up restoration conducted by the last owner. While little is known of this car’s early life, it is clear that it was originally equipped as a European example, with specifications including Veglia gauges in Italian, and the attractive smaller fender-side parking lights that characterize non-American cars.
Believed to have relocated to California’s mild climate by the 1980s, this arresting Alfa was purchased in the early 1990s by its last owner, a California-based collector who conducted a full restoration that provided for the refurbishment or replacement of every mechanical and cosmetic component to correct original specifications. The transmission, shocks, and water pump were all rebuilt, while the engine cylinder heads were disassembled, cleaned, and rebuilt with new valves, valve spring retainers, cam followers, and reground camshafts. All seals, bearings, and hoses were replaced as needed.
Cosmetically, the headliner and carpets were replaced with correct new fabrics in blue, while the seats and door panels were redone in authentic white vinyl upholstery with complementary blue piping. The body was stripped and re-aligned as needed for optimal panel fit, after which a deep coat of proper white paint was applied and polished to a resplendent shine. Cosmetic presentation was rounded out with proper new headlights, hubcaps, and emblems, while the chrome, engine bay, and undercarriage were all fastidiously detailed for as-new cosmetic appearance.
Completed in early 2008, the painstaking restoration earned acclaim at one of the most discerning stages for collectible Italian automobiles. Presented at the 2008 Concorso Italiano in Monterey, California, this Giulietta Sprint Speciale took home the Best-of-Marque award for Alfa Romeo, beating a field of some of Milan’s most impressive show cars. Dutifully maintained since the prestigious accolade, this Alfa is believed to have accrued less than 200 miles since its award-winning restoration, offering its next owner fresh mechanical performance as well as gorgeous cosmetic condition.
Equipped with a long-legged 5-speed transmission that is ideal for touring events or freeway cruising, this sensational Sprint Speciale offers dynamic styling derived from the great Bertone designer Franco Scaglione’s BAT concept cars of the early 1950s. It is one of just 1,366 examples of the SS produced during the Giulietta’s five-year production run, and one of far fewer that display such beautiful and fresh condition. Accompanied by a file of documentation including restoration invoices, Giulietta instruction and shop manuals and a parts catalog, a Glenn’s Alfa Romeo Repair and Tune-up guide, and a road test article from the July 1961 issue of Road & Track magazine, this rakishly styled Giulietta SS offers long term appreciation that has yet to peak, and promises spirited flashes of Italian performance-motoring or the thrill of future concours wins. It is a longtime California car with a proven exhibition record that should merit the attention of any alfisti or connoisseur of postwar European sports cars."
