This terrific example of the Franco Scaglione-penned Sprint Speciale benefits from decades of Italian ownership and an award-winning restoration. According to Alfa Romeo archives, chassis 177324 was completed on January 31, 1962, finished in Argento (Silver), and sold to an owner in Padua, Italy. A vintage registration booklet demonstrates a progression of Italian ownership and documents its export in 2013.

According to the consignor, the car was restored between 2008–2009 by Kristoffer Cartenian of Gipimotor in Brussels. The Giulietta was purchased in December 2013 by the consignor from Mr. Cartenian. The consignor then sold it to Benny Caiola III of Scottsdale, Arizona, son of the well-known collector. In April 2016, Mr. Caiola traded the Alfa back to the consignor, who rebuilt the engine to a lively 1,430 cc specification for improved performance.

Exquisite in its current presentation, the Sprint Speciale has experienced only break-in mileage on the engine rebuild. Winner of Best Alfa Romeo at the 2014 Tutto Italiano held at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline, Massachusetts, this Giulietta is documented with Italian registrations, invoices of the engine rebuild, and a corresponding dyno sheet.

It would be perfect for events like the Copperstate 1000, or display at concours d’elegance and marque events.

UPDATED: JANUARY 2024 BRING-A-TRAILER

This 1962 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale is one of approximately 1,366 examples produced and was initially delivered to Padua, Italy. The car was relocated to Belgium in the 2000s, where it is said to have been refurbished before being imported to the US in the early 2010s. The inline-four was subsequently modified to an increased displacement of 1,430cc and is mated to a five-speed manual transmission. Finished in silver over two-tone gray and blue upholstery, the car is equipped with dual Weber carburetors, 15″ Fergat-style wheels, three-shoe front drum brakes, a louvered alloy hood, and a plexiglass wind deflector. The car was awarded Best Alfa Romeo at the 2014 Tutto Italiano held at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum of Brookline, Massachusetts, and it was acquired by the selling dealer in 2023. This 101.20 Sprint Speciale is now offered with a service manual, a car show award, an Italian libretto, an Alfa Romeo Classiche Certificato di Origine, and a clean Montana title.

The Sprint Speciale featured styling by Bertone’s Franco Scaglione, who drew inspiration from his earlier Berlinetta Aerodinamica Tecnica prototype designs. Finished in Argento L.C. from the factory, this example was refinished as part of the aforementioned refurbishment. A plexiglass wind deflector sits behind the alloy hood, which features five louvers per side. Further details include chrome bumpers and quarter panel side spears as well as a left mirror, push-button doors, and Bertone fender badges.

Silver-finished 15″ Fergat-style wheels with polished Alfa Romeo-branded hubcaps wear 155-width Vredestein Sprint Classic tires, while a matching spare is stored in the trunk. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel finned drums with a three-shoe front setup.

The reupholstered cabin features low-back front bucket seats trimmed in gray cloth with blue piping and vinyl backs accompanied by color-coordinated door and side panels. The body-color metal dashboard is topped by a black vinyl pad and a rearview mirror, while the floors and rear parcel shelf are covered with red carpets.

The three-spoke steering wheel features an Alfa Romeo horn button and fronts Veglia instrumentation consisting of a central tachometer with an inset oil pressure readout, a 220-km/h speedometer, and a combination gauge. The five-digit odometer shows 43k kilometers (~27k miles), approximately 200 of which were added by the selling dealer. Total mileage is unknown.

The twin-cam inline-four was overhauled and modified in October 2016 to displace 1,430cc by Marcovicci-Wenz Engineering of Ronkonkoma, New York. Dual Weber carburetors are installed, and the results from a 2016 dynamometer test are pictured in the gallery below.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission. Replacement exhaust components have been installed.

The Alfa Romeo Certificato di Origine shows a production date of January 31, 1962, as well as initial delivery to Padua, Italy. A copy of the Italian libretto is viewable in the gallery below.

The car was awarded Best Alfa Romeo at the 2014 Tutto Italiano in Massachusetts, and the award is included in the sale.
